Wren’s Lantern Appeal

Illuminating our Journey

St James Garlickhythe, known for centuries as Wren’s Lantern, stands at the heart of the City of London as a place of welcome, reflection and journey. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and opened in 1682 on a site dating back to at least 1096, the church has long been associated with pilgrimage, community and music.

Our project, Wren’s Lantern, Illuminating Our Journey, seeks to reconnect people with this remarkable building and its history, while reimagining its role for contemporary life. We aim to restore the fabric of this historic church, open its stories to wider audiences and create a space that continues to inspire those who pass through it.

Through a sensitive programme of restoration and renewal, we will safeguard the building for future generations and transform it into a vibrant centre for worship, heritage, education, and community. Plans include the creation of a museum, the landscaping of the churchyard, improved accessibility and sustainable infrastructure, and new spaces for learning, reflection and gathering.

Rooted in the enduring themes of pilgrimage, parish life and craftsmanship, this project will illuminate the past while offering a place of connection and purpose in the present. We invite you to join us on this journey as we reawaken Wren’s Lantern for the City and beyond.
